2023 Sémillon

A cool, wet year, a later than average bud break—and a savory lending to an Old World, phenolic and fabulous punch to the gut.

The best kind of run-on sentence is this wine. It never finishes. Honeycomb and apple blossom; earth and straw. On the palate there are caramel notes and honey sticks, preserved lemon, and a natural acidity that keeps it bright and fresh.

Drink with paella, a grilled halloumi salad with fresh crunchy greens, or a deliciously creamy panna cotta.

Vineyard notes

An unusually wet and very cool start to 2023 resulted in budbreak commencing three weeks later than average. The fruit developed slowly through a cool and foggy summer. Lacking any major heatwaves during the summer, the vines produced beautifully abundant fruit weeks later than typical harvest dates.

Production notes

Both blocks were conveniently ripe at the same time this year, and the two lots were handled the same way in the winery. Half of each block went straight to press, and the other was destemmed and fermented skin contact. The pressed juice fermented and matured on full lees in neutral French oak barrels. The skin-contact lots spent 18, 25, and 35 days on the skins, after which they were pressed to neutral French oak barrels for aging.
